The Question

Their eyes first met that summer day
A deep and mystifying gaze
And two bright smiles broke through the haze
Two lost souls found each other

An understanding had this pair
A connection very truly rare
Some common ground that they could share
A meaning like no other

Their passion for each other deep
Yet from her heart she could not speak
A secret fear that she did keep
True feelings hid within her

And then a face out of the past
To free her from these chains at last
And hiding still behind the mask
Her feeling she did cover

Her mind and emotions far apart
She finally betrayed her heart
And travelled down the road less dark
Her fear she couldn't conquer

And now he sits just looking in
Onto that world he cannot win
Wondering what might have been
A question with no answer
